India were dealt a major blow ahead of the third and final ODI against England at Lord’s on Sunday, July 19, as premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out with a knee injury. Captain Shubman Gill confirmed the development at the toss before the Board of Control for Cricket in India issued an official medical update.

According to the BCCI, Bumrah sustained an impact injury to his left knee while fielding during the second ODI in Cardiff. The injury resulted in reactive swelling, and the medical team decided not to risk the star pacer for the series decider.

“Jasprit Bumrah had an impact injury on his left knee while fielding in the second ODI in Cardiff. He was not available for selection for the third ODI due to reactive swelling in his left knee,” the BCCI said in a statement.

Gill added that the team management had acted on medical advice, opting to rest Bumrah as a precautionary measure. Ahead of the match, Bumrah was seen speaking with Gill and senior batter Virat Kohli during India’s warm-up session.

India made three changes to the side that lost the second ODI in Cardiff, where England levelled the series 1-1. Prince Yadav replaced Bumrah in the pace attack, while KL Rahul returned to bolster the middle order. The management will hope the fresh additions help India regain momentum and clinch the three-match series.

Bumrah featured in the opening two ODIs and picked up two wickets. While his absence is a significant setback for India, the team will be hoping the injury is only a minor concern ahead of a packed international schedule.
