Pakistan The reported decision by Pakistan to boycott the marquee India clash is not being taken too seriously in cricketing circles in Mumbai, with many believing that the announcement—interestingly made by the Pakistan government—may not be the final word on the matter.

At present, it remains unclear whether the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has formally communicated its stance to the International Cricket Council (ICC). However, there is a strong belief that Pakistan could face serious consequences if it follows through and selectively forfeits only the India fixture. Such a move would directly challenge the ICC’s authority and autonomy, something the global body is unlikely to accept without resistance.

The ICC is understood to be firm on preventing any dangerous precedent. It is prepared to act strongly if its authority is questioned by individual member boards at short notice. While the exact course of action remains uncertain, potential measures could include asking member boards to deny No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for the Pakistan Super League (PSL), imposing restrictions on Pakistan’s participation in the Asia Cup, or even withholding the PCB’s share of ICC revenues.

Of the 55 matches scheduled in the World Cup, the India–Pakistan encounter is unquestionably the most high-profile and commercially significant. However, the February 15 clash cannot be viewed in isolation, as it forms part of the tournament’s overall broadcast and commercial package.

From a purely economic standpoint, each India international match is typically valued at around USD 10–11 million, roughly ₹100 crore. An India–Pakistan contest is believed to be worth at least double that amount, if not more. A potential loss exceeding ₹200 crore, therefore, would be a conservative estimate.

ICC warns against selective participation

Late on Sunday night, the ICC issued a strongly worded statement, cautioning against selective participation in global events.

“This position of selective participation is difficult to reconcile with the fundamental premise of a global sporting event, where all qualified teams are expected to compete on equal terms as per the event schedule. ICC tournaments are built on sporting integrity, competitiveness, consistency, and fairness, and selective participation undermines the spirit and sanctity of the competition,” the ICC said.

The governing body added that the successful delivery of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is a shared responsibility of all member boards, including the PCB, and urged Pakistan to seek a mutually acceptable resolution that protects the interests of all stakeholders.

While acknowledging the role of governments in national policy matters, the ICC stressed that such a decision would not serve the interests of the global game or fans worldwide, including millions in Pakistan. It also warned that the long-term implications could significantly impact cricket in Pakistan and disrupt the wider global cricket ecosystem—of which the PCB is both a member and beneficiary.take on Australia in the second T20I in Lahore.
