The Indian men’s hockey team’s new saffron jersey for next month’s FIH Hockey World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium has sparked mixed reactions among fans and former players. While many questioned Hockey India’s decision to move away from the iconic blue kit, captain Harmanpreet Singh has firmly backed the change, citing both practical and symbolic reasons.
Harmanpreet Singh Explains the Jersey Change
Speaking to The Bridge, Harmanpreet said the decision was not unprecedented, pointing out that India has worn different jersey colours in the past. He added that the blue playing surface often makes it difficult for players when the team is also dressed entirely in blue.
“It’s not the first time. Back in 2013–14, we wore a yellow jersey. After that, we switched to light blue and then dark blue. This time, we’ve chosen saffron. There are a few technical reasons as well. When you’re playing on a blue pitch while wearing a blue kit, it creates some difficulties. It’s not that we won medals because we wore blue, and we’re not making any excuses. We’re happy with the change, and the team is very excited about the new colour. We wore the official kit in our practice match today, and everyone is feeling very positive ahead of the World Cup,” Harmanpreet said.
What Does the New Jersey Represent?
Hockey India explained that the new jersey draws inspiration from the Indian national flag and the rising sun, symbolising new beginnings. The deep navy-blue accents are inspired by the Ashoka Chakra, representing progress, peace and focus.
According to the governing body, the design also incorporates elements of the Sudarshan Chakra, signifying strength, unity and momentum, while the saffron colour reflects courage, sacrifice and victory.
