Mohammad Amir has sparked major buzz in the cricket world after confirming that he has officially received British citizenship and a UK passport. The 34-year-old former Pakistan fast bowler announced on May 20, 2026 that all legal formalities in the United Kingdom have now been completed, marking what he described as the beginning of a “new journey” in his professional career.

The development immediately triggered speculation on social media about Amir potentially featuring in the Indian Premier League (IPL) from the 2027 season onwards. However, while his British citizenship has removed a major legal hurdle, reports claiming that he is already set to play in the IPL are premature.

Under current BCCI rules, players holding Pakistani citizenship are barred from participating in the IPL. But Amir’s situation is now different because he will no longer be registered as a Pakistani citizen in franchise cricket. His wife, Narjis Khan, is a British citizen, and after several years in the UK, Amir has now officially obtained British nationality.

This means Amir can now register as an overseas player, similar to former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, who represented IPL franchises using his British passport despite the ban on Pakistani players. Likewise, Sikandar Raza is eligible for the IPL because he represents Zimbabwe internationally.

Despite the growing speculation, no IPL franchise has officially approached Amir so far, and the BCCI has not issued any statement regarding his eligibility for IPL 2027. Reports suggest Amir is interested in the possibility of playing in the world’s biggest T20 league but will only take a final call after discussions with his family and legal advisors.

For now, Amir is expected to begin this “new journey” in English county cricket, where he will play as a local player in the upcoming domestic season. Interestingly, his British citizenship also means he will now enter future Pakistan Super League drafts as an overseas player.

Overall, while Mohammad Amir is now technically eligible to register for the IPL, his participation in the 2027 season remains speculation rather than a confirmed development.
