Nepal may have narrowly lost to England in their T20 World Cup 2026 clash at the Wankhede Stadium on February 8, but they won hearts with their spirit both on and off the field. While the thrilling encounter went down to the final ball, it was a touching moment after the match that truly captured global attention.

A video circulating on social media showed a Nepal supporter staying back in the stands to clean up garbage left behind by spectators. As most fans exited the stadium after the match, the lone supporter was seen collecting waste scattered across seats and aisles, easing the burden on the Wankhede Stadium’s cleaning staff. The gesture, done quietly and without any intention of publicity, quickly went viral and drew widespread praise online. Netizens lauded the fan’s civic sense, humility, and sense of responsibility, calling it a powerful reminder that respect for public spaces matters as much as passion for the game.

On the field, Nepal delivered a spirited performance in their opening match of the tournament. England were rocked early after Sher Malla dismissed Phil Salt in the second over, but half-centuries from Jacob Bethell (55) and captain Harry Brook (53) helped steady the innings. Their crucial 71-run partnership for the third wicket off just 45 balls lifted England to a competitive total of 184 in 20 overs.

Nepal responded with remarkable resilience. Rohit Paudel and Dipendra Singh Airee stitched together a vital 82-run partnership off 54 balls for the third wicket, keeping the chase alive. Later, Lokesh Bam produced a stunning late cameo, smashing an unbeaten 39 off just 20 deliveries to bring Nepal within touching distance of a famous win. However, Sam Curran kept his composure in the final over, defending the target as Nepal fell agonisingly short by four runs.

Despite the defeat, Nepal’s performance and sportsmanship earned them immense respect from fans and former cricketers alike. They will now look to carry that momentum into their next group-stage match against Italy on February 12 at the Wankhede Stadium, aiming to convert promise into points.
