Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s involvement in a heated altercation with Sri Lankan cricketer Vishen Halambage during the Tri-Nation Series has sparked widespread debate across the cricketing fraternity. The 15-year-old prodigy was reportedly subjected to constant sledging by Halambage, who repeatedly taunted him about his IPL 2026 exploits, eventually provoking a reaction from the young batter.

Although India A went on to lose the match in a Super Over, Sooryavanshi found himself at the centre of criticism on social media, with many questioning his conduct on the field. The incident also triggered speculation about a possible disciplinary action from the BCCI.

However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed such reports, making it clear that the Indian cricket board would not interfere in matters that fall under the jurisdiction of match officials.

“A lot of things are being discussed on social media about the BCCI contemplating action. Do you want the BCCI to step into the domain of the match referee?” Saikia said.

“The BCCI is not the authority in this matter. It would be inappropriate for us to intrude into an area where the match referee and the umpires are responsible for taking decisions regarding incidents that occur on the field.”

“Whatever happened was part of the game, and the BCCI has no role to play in it. The responsibility lies with the match referee and the umpires. There is a system in place, and if anything inappropriate has occurred, they are empowered to take the necessary call,” he added.

The incident unfolded during the tense Super Over in Dambulla, where Sooryavanshi was sent in to bat with India A requiring 14 runs from three deliveries. The youngster managed scores of 2 and 4 before failing to connect with the final ball, leaving India A short of the target.

As the Sri Lankan players celebrated loudly, the on-field banter and sledging reportedly intensified. While Sooryavanshi and teammate Suryansh Shedge initially appeared to brush it off, tensions soon escalated. Shedge turned back to confront the opposition players, with Sooryavanshi also getting involved and reportedly making physical contact with Halambage.

It remains unclear whether Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has formally charged Halambage over the incident. Since the tournament is not being conducted under the ICC’s jurisdiction, the matter is being handled internally by the SLC.

For now, the BCCI has taken no action against Sooryavanshi, and the youngster remains available for selection. He is expected to feature in India A’s next fixture against Afghanistan A on Wednesday.
