After beating the USA by 28 runs in their opening match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, India will next face Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, on February 12.
India’s campaign began with a worrying start. Asked to bat first, the top order collapsed under pressure from USA pacer Shadley van Schalkwyk, who finished with impressive figures of 4/25. India were struggling at 77 for 6 in the 13th over, staring at a below-par total.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav then produced a match-defining rescue act. After being dropped early on 15, he paced his innings smartly before launching a late assault in the final two overs. Suryakumar remained unbeaten on 84 off 49 balls, powering India to a competitive 161/9.
In reply, the USA never truly recovered from an early setback. Mohammed Siraj struck twice in his opening spell to reduce the visitors to 13/3. Though Sanjay Krishnamurthi (37) and Shubham Ranjane (37) showed resistance in the middle order, the chase lacked momentum. India’s spinners Axar Patel and Varun Chakravarthy kept things tight, restricting the USA to 132/8 and sealing a hard-fought win.
While concerns around India’s batting remain valid, it is worth noting that the team went into the match with limited resources. Harshit Rana was ruled out injured and replaced by Siraj, while Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar were unavailable due to illness and injury respectively.
India’s problems deepened when opener Abhishek Sharma reportedly fell ill during the game. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed on Tuesday (February 10) that Abhishek was still unwell, and Bumrah had not resumed bowling. Sundar, however, has rejoined the squad and is expected to return to bowling duties soon.
Given the strong performances of Siraj and Arshdeep Singh, India may opt to rest Bumrah for another match. Abhishek’s situation remains uncertain, but Sanju Samson is a capable short-term replacement if required. Sundar’s return could increase competition for spots, but Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube are likely to retain their places at least for one more game as the all-rounder regains full fitness.
