A dramatic last-over victory for England national cricket team over New Zealand national cricket team has kept Pakistan national cricket team in contention for a semi-final berth at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 — but the equation remains daunting.

Following the result, New Zealand’s net run rate (NRR) dropped to +1.39, still comfortably ahead of Pakistan’s –0.46. To leapfrog the Blackcaps into second place, Pakistan must defeat Sri Lanka national cricket team on Saturday — and by a massive margin.

What Pakistan Need to Do

  • If batting first: Pakistan must win by 64 runs.
    • For example, if they score 200, they must restrict Sri Lanka to 136 or fewer.
  • If chasing: They must complete the run chase in 13.1 overs (79 balls) or fewer, regardless of the target.

Failing to meet either benchmark would see New Zealand progress to the semi-finals alongside England, who top the group after winning all three Super 8 matches.

Can Pakistan Pull It Off?

Pakistan will draw confidence from Sri Lanka’s poor form. The co-hosts began the tournament brightly with three straight wins but have since lost three on the bounce, including two in the Super 8 stage, and are already eliminated from semi-final contention.

Sri Lanka are also without key bowlers Matheesha Pathirana and Wanindu Hasaranga due to injuries. Additionally, apart from Pathum Nissanka, their batting line-up has struggled for consistency.

However, Sri Lanka are unlikely to roll over. Reports in local media suggest that captain Dasun Shanaka and certain selectors could face scrutiny after the tournament, meaning several players have personal stakes in delivering a strong performance.

With qualification hinging not just on victory but on dominance, Pakistan’s semi-final hopes rest on producing one of the biggest wins of the tournament.
