At a Glance: Despite being named Player of the Tournament in India’s triumphant ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign just four months ago, Sanju Samson has been sensationally omitted from the T20I squad to face Zimbabwe. While Shreyas Iyer returns to lead a youthful side, selectors have chosen to invest heavily in the future—leaving Samson’s international T20I career facing fresh hurdles.

The BCCI unveiled India’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe on Monday, ringing in a new era for the format. While Shreyas Iyer returns to take the reins as captain and Tilak Varma steps up as vice-captain, the roster features a highly anticipated youth surge including Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Prabhsimran Singh, and 15-year-old teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

However, it is the omission of a prominent veteran that has sent shockwaves through the cricketing community: Sanju Samson.

The Big Question: Why Drop the World Cup MVP?

On paper, Samson’s exclusion seems baffling. Just four months ago, he was crowned Player of the Tournament during India’s victorious T20 World Cup 2026 run, finishing with a stellar 321 runs. He followed that international masterclass with another highly productive IPL season, hammering 477 runs for Chennai Super Kings.

The explanation, however, lies in the selectors’ shifting long-term priorities rather than Samson’s recent numbers.

Historically, inconsistency has shadowed Samson’s international career. Time and again, just as he seemed poised to cement his spot, sudden fluctuations in form opened the door for challengers. With an influx of dynamic, hungry, and younger options now banging on the door, the selection committee appears ready to move on.

The Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Factor: “Throw Him in the Deep End”

According to a report by The Times of India, the decision to leave Samson out was not entirely unanimous. However, powerful stakeholders strongly pushed for the immediate integration of the 15-year-old prodigy, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, arguing that a generational talent shouldn’t waste time on the bench.

“How can you make him carry drinks? The whole argument of ‘he will learn’ sounds so kiddish right now,” an anonymous source told The Times of India. “You don’t make him learn by carrying towels and drinks. You throw him in the deep end to swim when he is riding high on confidence.”

What’s Next for Samson? The Asian Games Twist

While the doors to the primary T20I squad have temporarily closed, Samson’s international season isn’t completely over. He has already been named in India’s squad for the upcoming Asian Games.

Interestingly, The Times of India report highlights that the tournament regulations still allow for last-minute modifications. If the senior team hierarchy has a change of heart or injury strikes, players can still be added or replaced before the event officially gets underway.

Whether Samson can grind his way back into India’s permanent T20I blueprint remains highly uncertain. But with the Asian Games on the horizon and squad doors still technically ajar, the final chapter of his international journey has yet to be written.
