Pakistan cricket has introduced an unusual but modern training method, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reportedly making it compulsory for players to play padel for 40 minutes on alternate days at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

According to reports, the decision has been taken by senior selector and Director of Performance Aaqib Javed as part of the PCB’s efforts to improve the team’s fielding standards and reflexes.

Padel — a sport that combines elements of tennis and squash — is believed to help players develop quicker reflexes, greater agility, and improved body flexibility. The PCB management reportedly feels that these qualities can translate into sharper fielding performances on the cricket field.

“Many of our players are already playing padel regularly, but they had to travel long distances to access the limited courts available in their hometowns. We have now built a dedicated padel court facility at the NCA for the players,” Aaqib Javed was quoted as saying.

The PCB is also working towards developing a state-of-the-art NCA facility aimed at modernising player training and recovery. In addition to the new padel courts, players will have access to an indoor basketball court, a recreation hall with snooker tables, and other indoor games.

The NCA already houses an AI-powered bowling machine, and the inclusion of padel and other sports is expected to make training more engaging while enhancing players’ overall fitness and athleticism.

With these initiatives, the PCB hopes to create a more holistic training environment that not only improves fitness levels but also has a direct positive impact on players’ on-field performances.

Meanwhile, Pakistan, under newly appointed Test captain Babar Azam, faces a demanding international schedule. The team is set to play a two-match Test series against the West Indies away from home, followed by a three-Test tour of England.

The upcoming five Tests will be crucial for Pakistan’s hopes of qualifying for the ICC World Test Championship Final in 2027.
