Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has provided an update on MS Dhoni’s fitness, admitting that the veteran wicketkeeper’s return is taking time as he recovers from a calf injury ahead of IPL 2026.
Speaking at the toss before CSK’s clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 5, Gaikwad said Dhoni is making steady progress but won’t be rushed back.
“MS is getting back on track slowly. Sometimes it takes time. We all hope he comes back really soon. He’s eager to play. It’ll be soon,” Gaikwad said.
Dhoni’s absence continues to hurt CSK
The RCB clash marks the third consecutive match Dhoni has missed this season. CSK have already suffered defeats against Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings, and his absence has been felt beyond just the numbers.
While Dhoni remains CSK’s highest run-scorer against RCB, it is his leadership and tactical acumen that the team has struggled to replace.
Team combinations under scrutiny
In Dhoni’s absence, CSK have experimented with their lineup:
- Sanju Samson has taken over wicketkeeping duties but has struggled with the bat so far
- Youngsters like Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma have been entrusted with finishing roles
- The decision to promote Samson and Gaikwad as openers while pushing Ayush Mhatre down the order hasn’t yielded results
With the batting unit misfiring and combinations yet to click, pressure is mounting on the five-time champions.
Must-win territory already?
On paper, RCB appear the more balanced side, and CSK risk slipping into a three-match losing streak if results don’t improve. With Dhoni nearing the twilight of his IPL career, this phase could well signal the beginning of a transition period for the franchise.
For CSK, the immediate challenge is clear — deliver results and restore confidence, even as they await the return of their most influential figure.
