An Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Australia could soon become a reality.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Cricket Australia (CA) has extended an “open invitation” to the BCCI to stage an IPL match on Australian soil. If approved, it would mark the first-ever IPL fixture to be played outside India.
The proposal comes just days after Cricket Australia confirmed that the Big Bash League (BBL) will make history by launching its 2026-27 season in Chennai, the first time the tournament will begin overseas.
The report adds that private discussions between the BCCI and Cricket Australia are already underway, with CA optimistic that the proposal will gain momentum. Cricket Australia is also reportedly keen to make the BBL’s Chennai opener an annual event as part of a broader strategic partnership between the two cricketing nations.
Neither the BCCI nor Cricket Australia has officially commented on the report.
Chennai Set to Host Historic BBL Opener
The latest development follows Friday’s landmark announcement by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), where the two leaders unveiled a new India-Australia sports partnership.
As part of the initiative, the 2026-27 Big Bash League season will begin with a historic opening match in Chennai, making it the first overseas fixture in the league’s history.
Beyond franchise cricket, the newly announced sports roadmap aims to strengthen collaboration in coaching, sports science, sports technology and the broader sports industry. It also includes plans to launch an India-Australia Youth Sports Festival to encourage sporting exchanges and cultural ties between young athletes from both countries.
The launch event at the MCG was attended by Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan, former Australia men’s captain Steve Waugh, and former Australia women’s captain Lisa Sthalekar.
