IPL Fuels BCCI’s Record Revenue, Contributing Nearly 60% in FY 2023–24

The Indian Premier League (IPL) continues to be the golden goose for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), powering its financial dominance in the cricketing world.

According to The Hindu Business Line, quoting Rediffusion, the BCCI earned a massive ₹9,741.7 crore in revenue during the 2023–24 financial year, with the IPL alone contributing ₹5,761 crore — that’s 59% of the board’s total income.

“BCCI in 2007 discovered a golden goose – the IPL, which is now a 100% BCCI-owned product. It’s the best in the business, and media rights are constantly rising,” said business strategist Lloyd Mathias.

The 10-team T20 franchise league, launched in 2007, attracts top cricket talent from India and across the globe and has become the most lucrative cricket tournament worldwide.

In contrast, non-IPL media rights brought in only ₹361 crore, highlighting the IPL’s dominance. However, experts believe the BCCI still hasn’t tapped into its full commercial potential.

“There’s immense scope to monetise traditional domestic formats like the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and CK Nayudu Trophy,” said Sandeep Goyal, Chief of Rediffusion.

The BCCI also boasts reserves of nearly ₹30,000 crore, earning approximately ₹1,000 crore annually in interest — showcasing financial sustainability and consistent growth. Goyal estimates that BCCI’s revenues are poised to grow 10–12% annually, driven by rising sponsorships, broadcasting deals, and match-day revenues.

Interestingly, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is reportedly reliant on the BCCI for funding, as it struggles to generate comparable revenue on its own.
