The start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season could reportedly be pushed back by at least two days.
According to reports by Cricbuzz and ESPNcricinfo, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had initially informed franchises that the tournament would begin on March 26, March 28 — and possibly March 29 — are now emerging as more likely start dates. ESPNcricinfo specifically reported that March 28 is set to be the revised opening day.
The final, however, is still expected to be held on May 31 as originally planned.
Why the Delay?
The BCCI typically announces the IPL schedule by this stage of the calendar. However, this year’s delay is reportedly linked to the upcoming assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and West Bengal.
The election dates are expected to overlap with several IPL fixtures, particularly in:
- Kolkata, home of Kolkata Knight Riders
- Chennai, base of Chennai Super Kings
- Guwahati, which serves as the second home venue for Rajasthan Royals
Initially, the BCCI had planned to release the full schedule once election dates were confirmed. However, with time running short and franchises seeking clarity, the board may opt to release a partial schedule first — a strategy previously adopted during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Opening Match Venue Uncertain
There is also uncertainty over the venue for the opening match. Traditionally, the defending champions host the curtain-raiser. This year, that would mean a game at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, home of Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
However, the stadium is currently at the centre of a dispute involving the franchise, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and the state government, casting doubt over whether it will host the season opener.
Governing Council Meeting Ahead
Most of the pending details are expected to be clarified after the upcoming IPL Governing Council meeting next week.
Separately, the BCCI has reportedly met with key stakeholders — including broadcaster JioHotstar and representatives of all 10 franchises — to discuss pre-season promotional strategies aimed at boosting fan engagement ahead of the tournament.
