As the cricket world turns its attention to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad for the T20 World Cup 2026 final on March 8, the Indian team management is reportedly considering a few crucial tactical changes. Despite securing a tense seven-run victory over England in the semifinal, head coach Gautam Gambhir and the team think tank understand that a different challenge awaits against an in-form New Zealand side.

According to reports, India could bench mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy and left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh for the experienced duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj in the title clash.

Concerns Over Varun Chakaravarthy’s Form

The potential change largely stems from a dip in form at a critical stage of the tournament. Varun Chakaravarthy, once considered a key weapon in India’s bowling attack, has struggled in recent matches.

During the semifinal against England at Wankhede Stadium, Varun endured a difficult outing, conceding 64 runs in his four overs while picking up just one wicket. His economy rate of 16.00 raised concerns within the team management, especially after another expensive spell against the West Indies earlier in the tournament.

On the typically batting-friendly surface expected in Ahmedabad, India may find it risky to rely on a spinner who has recently struggled to contain runs against aggressive batters.

Arshdeep Singh’s Recent Struggles

Arshdeep Singh’s possible exclusion is also linked to inconsistent performances in the death overs. While he has been one of India’s most reliable finishers with the ball in recent years, his form in the last couple of matches has raised doubts.

The left-arm pacer conceded 51 runs against England and faced similar challenges against the West Indies, where opposition batters targeted him in the closing overs.

With New Zealand opener Finn Allen in explosive form — including a recent 33-ball century — India may look for a bowler who can deliver tighter lines and early breakthroughs.

Kuldeep Yadav Could Offer a Tactical Shift

Kuldeep Yadav is seen as a potential tactical alternative in the middle overs. Unlike Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep relies more on flight, variation, and deception rather than pace off the pitch.

His ability to slow down the scoring rate and force batters into mistakes could be crucial against New Zealand’s aggressive batting lineup. Kuldeep has also proven effective in high-pressure situations, making him a strong option for a knockout match of this magnitude.

Mohammed Siraj and the ‘Ahmedabad Factor’

Mohammed Siraj could also return to the playing XI, partly because of his strong record at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Siraj’s ability to swing the new ball could prove vital in challenging New Zealand’s top order early. If he manages to remove one of the Kiwi openers quickly, it could disrupt their aggressive approach and give India early control of the match.

Abhishek Sharma Likely to Retain His Place

Despite struggling for runs in recent matches, Abhishek Sharma is likely to retain his place in the XI. Team management, led by Gambhir, appears keen to back the young opener in the high-stakes final, hoping he can deliver on his potential when it matters the most.

India’s Predicted Playing XI for the Final

Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan (wk), Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.

With the T20 World Cup trophy at stake, India’s selection decisions could prove decisive. The management will be hoping that the combination of experience, tactical adjustments, and home conditions helps them overcome a disciplined New Zealand side and successfully defend their world title.
