The International Cricket Council (ICC) has launched a high-level probe into explosive allegations that the Lawrence Bishnoi gang—a designated terrorist entity in Canada—infiltrated Cricket Canada to influence team selection and fix matches during the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Suspicious Activity in Chennai

The ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) is specifically scrutinizing a group-stage match between Canada and New Zealand, played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on February 17, 2026.

  • The “Suspicious Over”: Investigators are focusing on an over bowled by Canada’s captain, Dilpreet Bajwa, in which he conceded 15 runs, including a costly no-ball and a wide.

  • The Investigation: Bajwa, who was controversially appointed captain just three weeks before the tournament, has reportedly had his mobile phone seized and has undergone extensive questioning by the ACU.

Allegations of Intimidation and Threats

A documentary by the CBC’s The Fifth Estate has detailed a “culture of fear” within Canadian cricket, allegedly orchestrated by individuals claiming to represent the Bishnoi syndicate.

  • The Restaurant Incident: In July 2025, two individuals reportedly approached a star national player at a restaurant in Surrey, B.C., threatening him and his family with “dire consequences” if he did not support the promotion of Dilpreet Bajwa.

  • Leadership Influence: Sources allege the gang’s primary goal was to install loyalists in power to facilitate match-fixing for financial gain. The report also links these intimidation tactics to the rise of current Cricket Canada president Arvinder Khosa, though Khosa has dismissed the claims as “political propaganda.”

Wider Corruption Claims

The investigation has opened a Pandora’s box of administrative malpractice within the board:

  • Whistleblower Account: A witness referred to as “Noah” claimed he received death threats in Hindi via text message from the “Bishnoi Group” after opposing certain appointments.

  • Systemic Fixing: Former Canada coach Khurram Chohan alleged he was previously approached by top board officials to fix specific parts of matches.

Current Status: While Cricket Canada maintains it is “fully compliant” with ICC anti-corruption frameworks, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have been flagged regarding the gang-related threats. No formal charges have been laid as the ICC continues its review of the World Cup data.
