Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on a 14-year career across all three formats. Known for his explosive batting and ability to turn games around, Maxwell leaves behind a legacy as one of Australia’s most entertaining and impactful players.
The 37-year-old’s decision comes after a series of setbacks in recent years. Having already fallen out of contention for the Test side, Maxwell retired from ODI cricket in June 2025, with the Champions Trophy semi-final against India marking his final appearance in the format.
His future in T20I cricket also came under a cloud in 2026. Cricket Australia left him out of its central contracts for the 2026-27 season in April before excluding him from the squad for the Bangladesh tour in May-June.
Maxwell represented Australia in 286 international matches, scoring 7,226 runs and claiming 136 wickets. His tally included 3,990 runs in 149 ODIs, 2,897 runs in 130 T20Is and 339 runs in seven Test matches.
He was also part of three World Cup-winning Australian teams, lifting the ODI World Cup in 2015 and 2023, as well as the T20 World Cup in 2021.
One of the defining moments of Maxwell’s career came during the 2023 ODI World Cup against Afghanistan in Mumbai. Australia were in deep trouble at 91/7 while chasing a target of 292 when Maxwell produced an extraordinary innings to turn the contest around.
Battling severe cramps that significantly restricted his movement, the right-hander smashed an unbeaten 201 off just 128 deliveries, including 21 fours and 10 sixes. With Pat Cummins providing support at the other end, Maxwell stitched together an unbeaten 202-run partnership to guide Australia to a remarkable victory.
He became the first Australian men’s cricketer to score a double century in ODIs, with the innings widely regarded as one of the greatest individual performances in World Cup history.
Maxwell’s final appearance for Australia came against Oman in the T20 World Cup Super Eights on February 20, 2026.
While his international career has come to an end, Maxwell is expected to continue playing franchise cricket. He is contracted to Melbourne Stars for the 2026-27 Big Bash League season.
