BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed that the board will convene a high-level review meeting with core members of the Indian cricket team immediately following the conclusion of the ongoing tour of England. The intervention follows a highly concerning slump in the shortest format, coming just months after India made history by becoming the first nation to win three ICC Men’s T20 World Cups.
Since resuming their international calendar, the reigning world champions have endured a dismal run, losing five out of six T20Is (with one washed out due to rain). This slide includes back-to-back bilateral series losses, highlighted by a historic first-ever series defeat to Ireland last month.
No “Knee-Jerk” Reactions: Gambhir’s Job Safe
Despite growing scrutiny from fans and media, Saikia emphasized that the BCCI will handle the situation pragmatically rather than reacting impulsively. Reports indicate that head coach Gautam Gambhir’s position remains entirely secure, largely supported by the fact that India has clinched two ICC titles during his tenure.
“The BCCI is currently observing the performance of the Indian T20 team, which has not been up to the mark in the ongoing series against England. However, this is not something abnormal and can happen in international cricket. We consider it as a purely bad phase.” — Devajit Saikia, BCCI Secretary
Agenda and Key Attendees of the Review
The board intends to let the team focus on the upcoming 50-over leg before addressing the T20I shortcomings. The review will be formally conducted once the ODI series concludes on July 19 and the squad returns home.
- Strict Focus on Course Correction: Saikia explicitly stressed that the meeting will be strictly confined to evaluating team performance, identifying shortfalls, and mapping out a course correction. No administrative or off-field matters will be on the table.
- Key Participants: Head coach Gautam Gambhir and Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar will both be central figures in the meeting.
- Captain’s Availability Uncertain: It remains unclear if current T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer will attend the session in person, as he is expected to fly out for India’s upcoming three-match series in Zimbabwe.
The BCCI remains optimistic that the switch to the ODI format will allow the team to find its rhythm and bounce back into good form before the delegation returns to India.
