India slumped to a massive 76-run defeat against South Africa national cricket team in Ahmedabad during their Super 8 clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday. Chasing 188, the hosts were bundled out for just 111, leaving fans stunned.

The heavy loss not only cost India crucial points but also dented their Net Run Rate, which has now slipped to -3.80 — complicating their semi-final qualification scenario.

As the batting unit faltered under pressure, social media was flooded with nostalgic posts recalling Virat Kohli, who retired from T20Is after India’s 2024 World Cup triumph. Fans revisited some of his iconic match-winning knocks in T20 World Cup history.

Here’s a look at three memorable T20 World Cup games where Kohli steered India to victory:

T20 World Cup Semi-Final – 2014 (Mirpur)

India were set a target of 173 in a high-stakes semi-final. Despite a decent start, regular wickets added pressure. Kohli rose to the occasion with a masterclass — an unbeaten 72 off 44 balls. Supported by valuable contributions from Rohit Sharma (24), Ajinkya Rahane (32) and Suresh Raina (21), India chased down the target with six wickets in hand and five balls to spare.

T20 World Cup – 2016 (vs Australia, Mohali)

Facing Australia in a crucial Super 10 encounter, India were rocked early and reduced to 49/3 while chasing 161. Kohli once again took control, crafting a sublime unbeaten 82 off 51 deliveries. His calculated aggression and calm presence guided India to a six-wicket win in a must-win clash.

T20 World Cup – 2022 (vs Pakistan, Melbourne)

One of the most iconic T20 innings ever. Chasing 160 against Pakistan, India were reeling at 31/4. Kohli, alongside Hardik Pandya, stitched together a crucial 113-run partnership for the fifth wicket to revive the innings.

With 28 needed off 8 balls, Kohli smashed two stunning sixes off Haris Rauf to swing momentum India’s way. The dramatic final over saw multiple twists, including a no-ball and a wide from Mohammad Nawaz. Eventually, R Ashwin held his nerve to seal a famous four-wicket win.
