Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have reportedly explored the possibility of replacing long-time head coach Stephen Fleming, but franchise legend MS Dhoni could become a key factor in any major decision regarding the team’s future setup.
According to a report by The Indian Express, CSK were approached by a well-known Indian coach with close ties to the franchise last year. However, the management reportedly asked him to wait. Another potential candidate was also said to be hesitant about taking up the role as long as Dhoni remained associated with the team.
The report suggested that several coaches may feel uncertain about how much authority and control they would truly have within the dressing room due to Dhoni’s towering presence and influence at the franchise.
Stephen Fleming is currently under pressure after CSK failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs for the second consecutive season since winning the title in 2023. While Fleming continues to enjoy immense respect within the franchise, there is a growing feeling that CSK may consider a fresh direction to revive the team.
However, the report added that any decision regarding the head coach is likely to depend heavily on Dhoni’s future with the franchise.
Although Dhoni has reportedly distanced himself from day-to-day planning and strategy discussions in recent times, the former captain remains deeply connected to the team. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter has repeatedly made it clear that he wants to retire strictly on his own terms.
IPL 2026 turned out to be another frustrating season for Dhoni personally. He missed the first half of the tournament due to a calf injury and was later sidelined again because of delayed recovery and a thumb injury.
Despite not travelling with the squad for most away matches to avoid unnecessary distractions around the team, Dhoni’s presence continued to dominate discussions throughout the season. CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was frequently questioned about Dhoni’s fitness and availability during press conferences, highlighting the massive influence Dhoni still carries within the franchise and among fans.
While Dhoni has always prioritised CSK’s best interests, the franchise now faces an important transition phase as it looks to rebuild for the future after another disappointing IPL campaign.
