Pakistan batter Babar Azam could be set for a return as the country’s T20I captain, with reports suggesting the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering reinstating him ahead of its upcoming international assignments.

According to Pakistani publication Daily Ausaf, the PCB is reviewing the team’s recent performances in the shortest format and is weighing a leadership change. If the proposal is approved, Babar is expected to replace current T20I captain Salman Ali Agha.

The report comes shortly after Babar reportedly regained Pakistan’s Test captaincy, indicating that the PCB may once again be looking to rely on one of its most experienced leaders across formats.

Although the PCB has not made any official announcement, Babar has reportedly emerged as the frontrunner to lead the T20I side as Pakistan begins preparations for its upcoming bilateral series and future ICC tournaments.

Babar previously captained Pakistan in all three formats and enjoyed considerable success in T20Is. Under his leadership, Pakistan reached the semifinals of the 2021 T20 World Cup and finished runners-up in the 2022 edition. He also holds one of the best win percentages among Pakistan’s T20I captains.

Even if the captaincy changes, Salman Ali Agha is expected to remain an important part of the squad, with the PCB continuing to value his contributions as a player.

Babar remains one of Pakistan’s most reliable white-ball batters, and his experience, leadership record, and familiarity with the role are believed to be key reasons behind the board’s reported move.

An official decision is expected only after the PCB completes its internal discussions and finalises the squad for Pakistan’s next T20I series. Until then, the board has not commented publicly on the speculation.
