IND vs SA, T20 World Cup 2026: Star Indian batter Abhishek Sharma is facing heavy criticism after India slumped to a 76-run defeat against South Africa — their first loss of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and the heaviest in the team’s T20 World Cup history.
Known for his explosive stroke play, Abhishek has endured a difficult campaign. He registered three consecutive ducks earlier in the tournament and even missed the Namibia clash due to a stomach illness. His failures came against USA, Pakistan and the Netherlands, raising concerns about his form.
Hopes of a turnaround against South Africa were short-lived. Opening alongside Ishan Kishan, Abhishek watched his partner fall for a four-ball duck, caught by Ryan Rickelton off Aiden Markram. Although Abhishek managed to break his duck streak with a brisk 15 off 12 balls, including two fours and a six, he failed to convert it into a substantial innings.
Marco Jansen turned the game decisively, first dismissing Tilak Varma and then removing Abhishek courtesy of a sharp catch by Corbin Bosch. With India reeling, captain Suryakumar Yadav and Washington Sundar attempted to stabilise the chase, but wickets continued to tumble. Sundar departed for 11, while Suryakumar fell for 18, leaving India struggling at 51 for 5.
Following the defeat, calls have grown louder for Sanju Samson to be drafted into the playing XI. Many fans believe a change at the top is necessary, especially with Abhishek managing just 15 runs across four innings in the tournament so far.
