3 batters to score 700+ runs in a Test series for India

Gill, who is captaining the Indian Test side, needed 81 runs in the second innings to reach the landmark. Having ended Day 4 unbeaten on 78, he added three more on the fifth morning to complete 700 runs in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

Shubman Gill etched his name in Indian cricket history on Sunday, July 27, by becoming only the third Indian batter ever to score 700 or more runs in a single Test series. The milestone came during the final day of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford, Manchester.

Gill, who is captaining the Indian Test side, needed 81 runs in the second innings to reach the landmark. Having ended Day 4 unbeaten on 78, he added three more on the fifth morning to complete 700 runs in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

With this feat, Gill joins the legendary Sunil Gavaskar and rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal in a very exclusive list:

🇮🇳 Indians with 700+ Runs in a Test Series:

  • Sunil Gavaskar –
  • 774 runs vs West Indies (1971)
  • 732 runs vs West Indies (1978-79)
Gavaskar’s 774 in his debut series remains the highest ever by an Indian in a Test series.
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal –
  • 712 runs vs England (2024)
Jaiswal impressed at home with two double centuries and three fifties in five Tests.
  • Shubman Gill –
  • 700 runs vs England (2025)*
Notably, Gill is the first Indian to score 700+ runs in a Test series held in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia).

Gill’s 2025 Series Breakdown:

  • 1st Test: 147 & 8
  • 2nd Test: 269 & 161
  • 3rd Test (Lord’s): 16 & 6
  • 4th Test (Manchester): 12 & 81*

Despite a few low scores, Gill’s twin centuries and a stunning 269-run knock in the second Test powered his record-breaking run tally.

He is also the fourth player overall to score 700+ runs in a Test series between India and England — a prestigious rivalry that has seen many batting greats rise.

Gill’s consistency and flair have not only helped keep India in the fight in this crucial series but also cemented his place among the game’s modern elite.
