India’s Murali Sreeshankar continued his impressive run at the Commonwealth Games by winning a silver medal in the Men’s Long Jump at Glasgow 2026. The 27-year-old produced a best jump of 8.09 metres, earning his second consecutive Commonwealth Games silver after finishing runner-up in Birmingham 2022 with a jump of 8.08m.

Sreeshankar made a strong start to the final with an opening jump of 8.03m, but Jamaica’s Tajay Gayle and Scotland’s Stephen Mackenzie also crossed the 8-metre mark, leaving the Indian in third after the first round.

The Kerala athlete responded brilliantly in his second attempt, improving to 8.09m to move into the lead. Although he fouled his third attempt, he remained in contention for the gold medal.

However, the momentum shifted in the fourth round when Sreeshankar registered another foul before Gayle produced a superb jump of 8.15m to take the lead. Despite giving his best in the final two attempts, the Indian could not regain the top spot and settled for silver.

The result came as a slight disappointment for Sreeshankar, who had recorded a personal best of 8.38m at last month’s Inter-State National Championships, raising hopes of a gold medal in Glasgow.

Meanwhile, fellow Indian Lokesh Satyanathan finished fifth with a best effort of 7.97m. Despite winning the NCAA Indoor Championship earlier this year, he was unable to breach the 8-metre mark during the final.

With the podium finish, Sreeshankar became the third Indian athlete to win a silver medal in athletics at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, following Sarvesh Kushare in the men’s high jump and Gulveer Singh in the men’s 10,000m.

India also enjoyed a successful day in boxing, with Sakshi Choudhary, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach, Ankush Yadav, Narender Berwal, Jadumani Singh, Priya Ghanghas and Preeti Pawar advancing to the semi-finals after convincing quarter-final victories. Having secured at least bronze medals, the Indian boxers will now aim to convert their strong runs into gold-medal finishes.
