Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has raised concerns over what he believes is a growing disconnect between head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, warning that the lack of alignment has contributed to India’s disappointing T20I performances in Ireland and England.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Karthik said the coach and the chief selector appear to be working towards different objectives, creating confusion in the team’s transition phase.

“I feel there’s a bit of friction between the chief selector, who has long-term plans, and the current coach, who is thinking, ‘I want to win every game that I play.’ That’s where the confusion we’re seeing comes from,” Karthik said.

India’s experimental T20I side endured a disastrous UK tour, losing six of their seven matches, including a 2-0 series defeat to Ireland and a 4-0 loss to England, prompting widespread criticism of the team’s selection and planning.

Karthik believes the uncertainty has created unnecessary pressure on players competing for places.

“Is it ideal for the players? Definitely not. If you’re an Indian cricketer, you know the bench strength is enormous. Everyone is thinking, ‘If I have a couple of bad games, someone else could replace me.’ It’s a situation India needs to address and rectify as soon as possible,” he added.

Selection Calls Under the Scanner

The contrasting approaches of the selectors and team management have come under scrutiny in recent weeks, particularly following the treatment of Suryakumar Yadav.

Just months after captaining India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, Suryakumar was stripped of the captaincy and dropped from the T20I squad. Agarkar defended the move as part of a long-term transition, citing the batter’s age and inconsistent form as India builds towards the next World Cup cycle.

The decision to appoint Shreyas Iyer as T20I captain despite his absence from India’s World Cup squad has also divided opinion.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sanju Samson Handling Criticised

Karthik’s remarks come amid growing criticism over the handling of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sanju Samson during the England tour.

The 15-year-old Sooryavanshi earned a maiden India call-up after a sensational IPL 2026 campaign but did not feature during the Ireland series. He was later drafted into the playing XI in England after Samson’s poor run of form, only to be dropped again after scores of 14, 13 and 15, with Samson returning for the fifth T20I.

The constant chopping and changing drew criticism from several former cricketers, including Kris Srikkanth, who accused the team management of damaging the teenager’s confidence.

Focus Shifts to ODI Series

India will now look to put their T20I struggles behind them as they begin a three-match ODI series against England at Edgbaston.

The return of senior stars Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah provides a timely boost, while Shubman Gill will lead the side as India begins its preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

With the spotlight firmly on the team’s leadership and selection strategy following a disappointing T20I campaign, the ODI series presents an opportunity for India to regain momentum and restore confidence.
