Neymar has suffered another injury setback ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 preparations, but the Brazil star is still expected to join the national team camp next week.

The Santos FC forward is currently dealing with a minor calf injury in his right leg. Santos’ head of medical department, Rodrigo Zogaib, confirmed on Wednesday that Neymar has swelling along with a small 2-millimeter edema in his calf.

Despite the concern, the club’s medical staff remains optimistic about his recovery before Brazil’s World Cup preparations begin on May 27.

“Neymar has a minor calf injury and some swelling. However, according to our plan, he will be ready to join the national team camp next week,” Rodrigo Zogaib said while providing an update on the forward’s condition.

As a precaution, Santos decided not to include Neymar in their Copa Sudamericana clash against San Lorenzo, which ended in a 2-2 draw. The club is also expected to rest him for the upcoming Brazilian league fixture against Grêmio FBPA. He could additionally miss Santos’ final group-stage match against Deportivo Cuenca.

The latest injury once again highlights Neymar’s ongoing fitness struggles in recent years. According to reports from Transfermarkt, the Brazilian star has suffered nearly 40 injuries since 2013, averaging more than three injuries per year.

Due to repeated fitness issues, Neymar has reportedly missed over 1,400 days of football — almost four full years — during his professional career.

Despite the setback, Brazil remain hopeful that the experienced forward will recover in time for the FIFA World Cup 2026 preparations, where he is expected to play a key role alongside stars like Vinícius Júnior, Raphinha, Gabriel Martinelli and Endrick.
