With 57 of the 70 league matches completed in IPL 2026, the playoff race is entering a thrilling phase. Interestingly, not a single team has officially secured qualification yet, although two teams — Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants — have already been eliminated from contention.

On Wednesday night, Royal Challengers Bengaluru strengthened their playoff hopes with a crucial victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in Raipur. The win helped RCB register their eighth victory of the season and move level with Gujarat Titans on 16 points. However, thanks to a superior net run rate, RCB reclaimed the top spot in the standings.

For KKR, though, the defeat dealt a significant blow to their playoff ambitions.

Are RCB Assured Of A Playoff Spot?

Short answer: No.

Despite sitting at the top of the table with 16 points, RCB are not yet mathematically guaranteed a top-four finish.

The Rajat Patidar-led side still has two league matches remaining — against Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

A victory over Punjab Kings would take RCB to 18 points and virtually confirm their playoff qualification.

However, a defeat to PBKS could complicate matters.

Even if RCB then beat SRH and finish with 18 points, qualification may still depend on net run rate. Teams such as Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals are also capable of finishing on 18 points, which means NRR could become the deciding factor.

RCB would therefore want to avoid leaving qualification to calculations and secure another win as quickly as possible.

Can KKR Still Qualify?

Yes — but their path is now extremely difficult.

KKR’s defeat to RCB ended their run of four consecutive victories and left them heavily dependent on other results.

The three-time champions still have three league matches remaining:

  • vs Gujarat Titans
  • vs Mumbai Indians
  • vs Delhi Capitals

If KKR win all three games, they can reach a maximum of 15 points. While that total could still prove enough for a playoff berth in a tightly contested season, they would also need several other results to go their way.

Any further slip-up, however, would officially eliminate them from the playoff race.

With just 13 league games left before the playoffs, the battle for the top four remains wide open, and nearly every upcoming fixture now carries knockout-level importance.
