The start of the IPL 2026 clash between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Guwahati on Friday was delayed due to persistent rain interruptions before and after the toss.
With covers placed on the field ahead of the toss, the rain briefly subsided, allowing proceedings to resume. Rajasthan Royals skipper Riyan Parag won the toss at 8:00 PM IST and opted to field. However, moments after RCB captain Rajat Patidar addressed the broadcasters, a fresh drizzle forced the covers back on, delaying the already postponed 8:15 PM IST start.
Although the shower was light, it was enough to halt play temporarily. Despite the interruption, officials remained optimistic about completing a full match.
The fixture is being held at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, which previously hosted a rain-affected encounter between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians. That match saw a delayed start and was reduced to 11 overs per side.
According to Indian Premier League playing conditions, a result can only be achieved if both teams get the opportunity to bat for at least five overs—unless one side is bowled out earlier or the chasing team reaches the target within that limit.
“All matches in which both teams haven’t had an opportunity of batting for a minimum of five overs shall be declared a No Result,” state the IPL regulations.
Encouragingly, within 10 minutes of the latest interruption, the ground staff began removing covers from the centre, raising hopes of play resuming soon.
Rain has played a disruptive role in several IPL 2026 fixtures. A recent match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens was washed out after fewer than four overs were bowled, forcing both teams to share points. Inclement weather was also forecast for the clash between Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans in Delhi.
In Guwahati, conditions are expected to improve later in the night, with forecasts indicating clearer skies by 11:00 PM IST. However, there remains a 37% chance of rain before then, keeping players, officials, and fans on edge.
