There is still nearly a year left on Gautam Gambhir’s contract as India’s head coach, which runs until the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, multiple IPL franchises have reportedly started approaching the former India opener for a coaching role ahead of the 2028 season.
Gambhir’s reputation as a successful white-ball coach continues to grow, particularly in T20 cricket. He won two IPL titles as Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) captain before returning to the franchise in 2024 as a mentor and guiding them to their third IPL crown — their first since 2014.
Before joining KKR, Gambhir also guided Lucknow Super Giants to the playoffs in each of their first two IPL seasons. His success has since extended to the international stage, with India winning the 2025 Champions Trophy and 2026 T20 World Cup under his tenure as head coach.
According to a report in Dainik Jagran, KKR and Rajasthan Royals are among four IPL franchises that have reportedly made contact with Gambhir. The interested teams are said to include both established title-winning franchises and a side still searching for its maiden IPL trophy.
Will Gambhir Seek an Extension with India?
Gambhir’s potential return to the IPL will largely depend on his future with the Indian team. His current contract runs until the 2027 ODI World Cup, although he could continue in the role until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket is set to make its return.
Gambhir took charge of the Indian team following the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup, succeeding Rahul Dravid.
Under his leadership, India have remained a formidable force in T20Is, while their ODI performances have been relatively mixed. The team have won four bilateral ODI series and the Champions Trophy, but have also suffered defeats in four bilateral series.
Gambhir is currently in New Zealand with the Indian team for a multi-format tour featuring five T20Is, five ODIs and two Test matches.
