Veteran actor Nana Patekar’s death at the age of 75 has left the Indian film industry mourning the loss of one of its most distinctive performers. Known for his powerful performances and memorable dialogue delivery, Patekar had a career spanning Hindi and Marathi cinema.
However, long before he became a celebrated actor, Patekar had another passion — cricket.
As a youngster, Patekar spent considerable time playing cricket at Mumbai’s iconic Shivaji Park, a ground that has been closely associated with some of India’s biggest cricketing names. It was here that he came into contact with players who would later go on to represent India, including Sunil Gavaskar and Sandeep Patil.
Nana Patekar’s Cricket Journey at Shivaji Park
Patekar had started playing cricket at Shivaji Park when he was around 13 years old. The famous Mumbai ground became an important part of his childhood and sporting journey.
Among the players he looked up to was Sunil Gavaskar, who went on to become one of India’s greatest opening batters. Patekar considered Gavaskar his role model and later spoke about the influence the former India captain had on him.
His time at Shivaji Park also brought him into contact with Sandeep Patil, who was younger than Patekar and would later establish himself as a stylish India batter.
For Patekar, cricket was more than just a pastime. It was a sport he enjoyed deeply and one that remained an important part of his early years.
Why Did Nana Patekar Leave Cricket?
Despite his love for the game, Patekar eventually had to give up cricket. A finger injury suffered while playing was one of the reasons that forced him away from the sport.
His family circumstances also played an important role. Patekar had responsibilities at home and needed to work to support his parents. He eventually moved away from cricket, pursued his education and gradually found his way into theatre and acting.
What began as a sporting journey at Shivaji Park ultimately took him towards a completely different career.
From Shivaji Park to Indian Cinema
Patekar went on to build a remarkable career in theatre, Hindi and Marathi cinema. His intense acting style and ability to portray a wide range of characters made him one of the most respected actors of his generation.
He delivered acclaimed performances in films such as Parinda, Krantiveer, Natsamrat, Agni Sakshi and Welcome, among many others. He also won three National Film Awards and was honoured with the Padma Shri for his contribution to the arts.
While cinema eventually became his calling, his early association with cricket remains a fascinating chapter of his life.
Nana Patekar and Sunil Gavaskar: A Lesser-Known Connection
Patekar’s association with Gavaskar went beyond simply sharing the same cricket ground. He admired the legendary batter and considered him a role model.
Following Patekar’s death, Gavaskar also remembered the actor fondly, highlighting the personal bond they shared over the years.
From playing cricket as a teenager at Shivaji Park to becoming one of Indian cinema’s most recognisable actors, Patekar’s journey took several unexpected turns.
His cricketing dreams may not have lasted, but the memories he made at Shivaji Park — playing alongside and watching future India stars — remained a unique par
