The ODI series against England holds significant importance for India as veteran stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return to the side. By the time the 2027 ODI World Cup arrives in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, Rohit will be 40 while Kohli will be 38. Although their experience and class remain invaluable, questions continue to be raised about whether they can cope with the demands of international cricket over the next two years.
Adding to the speculation, reports suggest that the England series could prove crucial for Rohit Sharma’s ODI future. According to a report in The Times of India, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is closely monitoring the veteran opener’s performances, with his place in the side reportedly under scrutiny if he fails to deliver in the three-match series.
Despite leading India to the 2023 ODI World Cup final, Rohit’s recent returns in the format have been underwhelming. Since retiring from T20Is and Test cricket, he has featured in six ODIs this year, scoring 204 runs at an average of 34, with just one half-century to his name.
His inconsistent form at the top of the order has intensified competition for places, especially with younger batters waiting for opportunities. Yashasvi Jaiswal is yet to cement his place in the ODI side, while Ishan Kishan has impressed whenever given a chance despite remaining out of the playing XI.
Rohit, however, is not the only senior player reportedly under pressure. The report adds that Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are also being assessed as India gradually prepares for the future. The selectors are understood to be considering rotating the experienced trio with younger players to provide the next generation with more game time ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
While such rotation does not necessarily indicate that their places are in immediate danger, consistent performances from players like Jaiswal and Kishan could increase the competition and make selection decisions more challenging in the months ahead.
