Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have parted ways with long-serving head coach Stephen Fleming, bringing an end to one of the most successful coach-franchise partnerships in the tournament’s history.

Fleming joined CSK as a player in the inaugural IPL season in 2008 before taking over as head coach in 2009. Over the next 17 years, the former New Zealand captain played a pivotal role in building one of the most consistent and successful franchises in T20 cricket.

Under Fleming’s leadership, CSK won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 crowns. The franchise also qualified for the IPL playoffs a record 12 times and reached the final on 10 occasions.

The decision comes after another disappointing IPL campaign in which CSK finished eighth and failed to qualify for the playoffs for a third consecutive season.

Reflecting on his departure, Fleming expressed gratitude for his long association with the franchise.

“Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved together.

“We celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and created memories that will stay with me forever. CSK will always be close to my heart, and I’ll continue cheering for the team in the years to come,” Fleming said.

CSK Managing Director KS Viswanathan hailed Fleming’s contribution, saying his influence went far beyond results on the field.

“From the earliest days of this journey, Stephen helped define not just how we played but what we wanted to be as a franchise. He built a culture rooted in consistency, humility and putting the team first. His ability to understand people and bring out the best in individuals has been one of his greatest strengths. His influence extends far beyond the boundary, and we are proud to have shared this remarkable journey together,” Viswanathan said.

CSK owner Rupa Gurunath described Fleming as the “heartbeat” of the franchise’s coaching setup.

“Stephen Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise. For nearly two decades, he has helped shape our identity, vision and pursuit of excellence.

“On behalf of everyone at Chennai Super Kings, we extend our deepest gratitude for his unwavering commitment, passion and leadership. While our journey together on the field comes to a close, he will always remain an integral part of the franchise’s legacy,” she said.
