Former India head coach Rahul Dravid has emerged as one of the leading candidates to replace Brendon McCullum as England’s Test coach after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) reportedly began exploring potential successors.

McCullum has stepped down as England’s Test coach but will continue to oversee the country’s white-ball teams, creating a vacancy for one of the most high-profile coaching roles in international cricket.

According to a report in The Daily Telegraph, cited by PTI, Dravid is among the frontrunners being considered for the position. Although the former India captain is not believed to be interested in a full-time coaching role, a Test-only assignment could offer him greater flexibility and more time with his family.

Dravid most recently coached India, guiding the team to the ICC World Test Championship final and ending the country’s 11-year ICC trophy drought with victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup.

However, there has been no official confirmation from either Dravid or the ECB regarding his candidature.

Meanwhile, former England head coach Andy Flower is also reportedly a strong contender for the role. The ECB is said to be open to appointing a coach who is simultaneously involved in the IPL, a scenario that would allow Flower to continue working with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Flower previously enjoyed a successful stint with England, leading the team to three Ashes series victories and the No. 1 ranking in Test cricket.

The reported shortlist also includes Richard Dawson, Kumar Sangakkara, Andrew Flintoff, Mike Hesson, and Justin Langer.

ECB chief executive Richard Gould confirmed that the board already has a list of potential candidates in mind.

“There’s always a shortlist in place for all key jobs at the ECB, including my own,” Gould was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “We need to be progressive in these issues. We’ve got players trying to balance between county, franchise and international cricket. It’s a really busy calendar. We may well have to do the same with our coaching staff and supporting staff. We already do, to an extent, but I think that is something we will have to look at.”

While speculation continues to grow, the ECB is yet to announce a timeline for appointing England’s next Test head coach.
