The Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) 2026 campaign has been dealt its most severe blow yet as the franchise confirmed on Tuesday, April 21, that breakout star Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

The Injury: A Season-Ending Setback

The 18-year-old opening sensation sustained a left hamstring injury during CSK’s narrow 10-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 18. Mhatre was visibly distressed after completing a double, eventually requiring assistance to leave the field.

  • The Diagnosis: CSK officials confirmed the injury will require a 6–12 week rehabilitation period, effectively ending his participation in the current edition.

  • The Statistical Loss: Mhatre departs as CSK’s leading run-scorer this season, having amassed 201 runs in six innings at a blistering strike rate of 177.87. Since debuting as an injury replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad last season, he has been a rare bright spot with 441 career runs for the franchise.

Growing Injury Crisis at Chepauk

Mhatre’s departure joins a mounting list of unavailable personnel for the five-time champions, who currently sit at 8th in the points table with a 2–4 record.

  • The Dhoni Mystery: MS Dhoni remains sidelined with a calf strain. Despite recent footage of him hitting sixes in the nets, batting coach Mike Hussey noted that the 44-year-old is still working on his “match-running speed.” Reports suggest a potential return on April 26 against Gujarat Titans.

  • Bowling Woes: Left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed (quadriceps) and Nathan Ellis (pre-season injury) are also ruled out.

  • Silver Lining: Explosive South African Dewald Brevis has successfully returned to the XI after missing the start of the tournament.

Pressure on the Top Order

With Mhatre out, the burden shifts to the struggling opening pair of Sanju Samson and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad.

  • Gaikwad’s Slump: The captain has managed only 82 runs in six innings (average 13.67), leading to calls from former players like S. Badrinath to hand the captaincy to Samson to “offload the pressure.”

  • Samson’s Rollercoaster: While Samson struck a magnificent 115 off 56 balls earlier this month against Delhi Capitals, his scores in the other five innings have mostly been in the single digits.

CSK now faces a race against time to find a replacement player and stabilize their top order before their next fixture, as their hopes for a sixth title hang by a thread.
