Harshit Rana has become the latest bowler from Kolkata Knight Riders who could miss the entire season of the Indian Premier League 2026.
The Indian pacer played a key role in KKR’s bowling attack last season, leading the pace unit in the absence of Mitchell Starc. However, Rana picked up an injury while playing warm-up games during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, casting serious doubt over his participation in the upcoming IPL season.
KKR’s Pace Attack Facing Multiple Setbacks
KKR entered the IPL 2026 auction with the largest purse and made major signings, bringing in players such as Cameron Green, Matheesha Pathirana, and Mustafizur Rahman.
However, their pace bowling resources have taken a major hit even before the tournament begins.
The problems began when the Board of Control for Cricket in India instructed KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman due to the ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh. Soon after, Harshit Rana suffered an injury, while Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana also picked up a fitness issue during the T20 World Cup.
To address the situation, KKR brought in Blessing Muzarabani as Mustafizur’s replacement. However, the team still faces significant concerns regarding its bowling depth.
Death Bowling Concerns for KKR
KKR had initially planned a strong pace attack featuring Pathirana, Mustafizur, Rana, and Vaibhav Arora.
Arora has regularly taken the new ball for KKR in recent seasons, while Rana had established himself as the team’s go-to bowler in the death overs. With Pathirana and Mustafizur in the squad, the franchise expected multiple options for closing out innings.
But with Rana injured, Mustafizur unavailable, and Pathirana potentially missing games, the Knight Riders could struggle in the crucial death overs.
Compounding the issue is the retirement of Andre Russell, which has left the side without a reliable third pace option.
Currently, Arora and Muzarabani are likely to lead the pace attack and share the new ball. However, both bowlers are more comfortable in the powerplay phase, raising questions about KKR’s death bowling strategy.
Spin Department Remains Strong
One area where KKR remain well covered is spin. The presence of experienced bowlers like Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy ensures that the team’s middle-over bowling remains a strong point.
However, the franchise will still need to identify at least two additional bowling options, particularly for the final overs.
Reserve Pacers Could Get Opportunities
KKR do have several fast bowlers in their reserves, including Akash Deep, Umran Malik, and Kartik Tyagi.
However, each option comes with its own concerns. Akash Deep has struggled in T20 cricket, conceding runs at an economy rate of over 11 runs per over in 14 IPL matches.
Umran Malik has also endured a dip in form since his breakthrough season in IPL 2022. Over the last three years, he has played only nine IPL matches and has maintained an economy rate above 11 runs per over.
Meanwhile, Kartik Tyagi has had limited game time in recent seasons, featuring in just 10 IPL matches since 2021. However, he does have experience bowling in the death overs, which could make him a valuable option for KKR.
Overseas Opening Option for KKR
One positive for KKR amid the bowling uncertainty is their flexibility with overseas combinations.
With Pathirana and Mustafizur unlikely to be available, the franchise can now field an overseas opening pair featuring New Zealand batters Tim Seifert and Finn Allen.
The duo impressed during the T20 World Cup and could provide KKR with an explosive start at the top of the order.
Additionally, KKR could opt for an all-Indian pace attack or bring in a spinner like Anukul Roy if conditions at Eden Gardens favour spin.
Major Selection Challenges Ahead
With multiple injuries and player unavailability issues, KKR face a significant challenge ahead of IPL 2026. The franchise will need to quickly find solutions for their pace bowling combination, particularly in the death overs, if they hope to remain competitive in the tournament.
