India defeat New Zealand by 90 runs and defend title

New Zealand lost early wickets in the 256-run Chase

While the fans wait for the summit clash at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, they will be treated with a stunning performance from Ricky Martin, Falguni Pathak and Sukhbir Singh.

“Sport and music have a unique way of bringing people together, and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is a celebration of that shared passion. It’s an honour to be part of such a special occasion, where millions of fans come together with incredible energy and love for the game. I’m excited to perform at the Closing Ceremony and celebrate the thrill of the tournament with fans in the stadium and around the world,” Ricky Martin said.

As the India national cricket team prepares to face the New Zealand national cricket team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final on Sunday, the atmosphere is charged with anticipation. The summit clash at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium promises to be a thrilling encounter between two sides that have consistently performed at the highest level in ICC tournaments.

Jonathan Trott’s “Home Advantage” Remark

During the India vs England semifinal, former England batter Jonathan Trott raised an interesting point about India’s performances at home in ICC tournaments. While he did not explicitly state it, Trott hinted that India playing bilateral cricket at home and India playing ICC tournaments at home might be two different propositions.

However, India’s victory in the semifinal against England appeared to counter that narrative, showing that the team is capable of handling the pressure of playing in front of a home crowd.

Memories of the 2023 World Cup Still Linger

Despite their strong form, Indian fans cannot forget the heartbreak of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final. On that night, Australia captain Pat Cummins famously spoke about the “satisfaction” of silencing a crowd of over 120,000 at the same venue.

Those memories continue to linger as India once again prepare to play a major ICC final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Interestingly, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner acknowledged the challenge of playing in front of a packed Indian crowd but did not shy away from the idea of doing the same.

“Yeah, I guess that’s the goal, isn’t it—to silence the crowd. But there are a lot of variables in T20 cricket and it can be quite unpredictable,” Santner said ahead of the final.

He also pointed out that the pressure of expectations will be firmly on India’s shoulders.

“There’s obviously a lot of pressure on India to win this World Cup at home. If we can put that added pressure on them, we’ll see what happens.”

India’s Dominant Run in Recent ICC Events

A lot has changed since that painful night in 2023. India have since lifted the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, re-establishing themselves as one of the most dominant teams in world cricket.

Under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, India have once again demonstrated their ability to perform in high-pressure moments during the 2026 tournament.

If India manage to win the final, they will become the first team in history to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title.

Concerns Around Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakaravarthy

Despite India’s strong campaign, a few concerns remain ahead of the final.

Two players in particular — Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakaravarthy — have struggled during the tournament.

Ironically, both players currently hold the No.1 ranking in T20 batting and bowling respectively, yet their performances in the tournament have been underwhelming.

  • Abhishek Sharma has scored just 89 runs in eight matches
  • Varun Chakaravarthy has been expensive and targeted by opposition batters

Despite the criticism, captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed that Chakaravarthy will not be replaced for the final.

Tactical Decisions That Could Decide the Match

One of the key tactical areas for India will be managing the sixth bowling option, which remains a slight concern.

However, India’s semifinal win against England showed the captain’s tactical brilliance. Suryakumar’s clever rotation of bowlers helped India successfully defend 45 runs in the final three overs, with key contributions from players like Sanju Samson.

Still, India would hope for more runs from their captain with the bat in the final.

The New Zealand Threat

New Zealand enter the final with a fearless mindset and plenty of firepower.

The opening pair of Finn Allen and Tim Seifert have been explosive throughout the tournament. Their aggressive start in the semifinal against South Africa proved how dangerous they can be.

To counter this, India may need to deploy their pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah earlier than usual to break the opening partnership.

Apart from the openers, Santner himself can be dangerous in the death overs, adding further depth to the New Zealand batting lineup.

Pitch and Dew Could Play a Major Role

The pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium is expected to be a mix of red and black soil, which typically produces high-scoring matches.

Both captains were asked if another 250-plus total could be on the cards, reflecting how batting-friendly the surface might be.

However, the bigger concern could be dew, which has influenced several matches during the tournament. A heavy dew factor often gives an advantage to the chasing team, making the toss potentially decisive.

For a World Cup final, many hope the match is decided by skill rather than conditions.

A Rivalry Growing in ICC Finals

The India-New Zealand rivalry in ICC tournaments has grown significantly over the years.

This will be the third ICC final between the two sides in six years, following:

  • 2021 ICC World Test Championship Final – won by New Zealand
  • 2025 ICC Champions Trophy Final – won by India

Overall, New Zealand have historically enjoyed success against India in T20 World Cups, winning all three previous encounters in 2007, 2016, and 2021.

A Historic Opportunity for India

India are appearing in their fourth T20 World Cup final, the most by any team in the tournament’s history.

Six of the previous nine finals have been won by the team chasing, though India have famously won twice while defending totals — in 2007 and 2024, both thrilling last-over finishes.

With a roaring home crowd expected in Ahmedabad, India will hope to finally break their T20 World Cup jinx against New Zealand and lift yet another ICC trophy.

But if Santner’s men have their way, they would not mind breaking a few Indian hearts and taking the trophy back to New Zealand.
