Back-to-back wins in the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 have sealed England national cricket team a record fifth consecutive semi-final appearance. In contrast, Sri Lanka national cricket team have now failed to reach the last four for five straight editions since their 2014 title triumph.
That leaves New Zealand national cricket team and Pakistan national cricket team fighting for the second semi-final berth from Group 2. The Blackcaps boosted their chances significantly with a commanding 61-run win over Sri Lanka on Wednesday, lifting their net run rate (NRR) to +3.050.

Qualification Scenarios
If New Zealand Beat England
New Zealand will top the group with five points and qualify for the semi-finals. The Sri Lanka vs Pakistan match would then become inconsequential.
If England Beat New Zealand
New Zealand would hope Sri Lanka defeat Pakistan to progress without NRR complications. The standings would then read:
- England – 4 points
- New Zealand – 3 points
- Sri Lanka – 2 points
- Pakistan – 1 point
However, if Pakistan beat Sri Lanka, they would be tied with New Zealand on three points each, bringing NRR into play.
The NRR Equation
If England defeat New Zealand by 50 runs, Pakistan would need to beat Sri Lanka by at least 20 runs to overtake New Zealand’s NRR (based on a projected first-innings score of 170, which matches the tournament average in Sri Lanka).
If Pakistan chase, they would need to complete the target in approximately 17.5 overs (assuming the same 50-run England victory margin). Any smaller margin would see New Zealand advance.
With permutations tightening and margins crucial, Group 2 is set for a dramatic finish.
