The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have received a major boost ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season after CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that MS Dhoni will return for the upcoming edition.
“He will play, he will play,” Viswanathan told reporters, putting an end to speculation surrounding Dhoni’s future.
While the confirmation has delighted CSK fans, it has also raised questions about the role of Sanju Samson, who was recently acquired by the franchise in a blockbuster trade. Samson joined CSK for ₹18 crore, while Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran moved to the Rajasthan Royals for ₹14 crore and ₹2.4 crore respectively.
In an emotional message following the trade, Samson expressed gratitude for his time with Rajasthan, calling it a journey filled with cherished memories and lifelong bonds.
From a team-combination perspective, however, breaking into the CSK playing XI may not be straightforward. Samson had been opening the innings for Rajasthan before injury ruled him out, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stepping in.
At CSK, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad could return to the top of the order, potentially alongside Ayush Mhatre. At No. 3, someone like Dewald Brevis could slot in, followed by Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube in the middle order. Dhoni is also expected to continue as wicketkeeper, further limiting available spots.
With Dhoni likely to retain the gloves and several batting options already in place, Samson may face stiff competition for a starting role. If he fails to secure a place in the XI, it would be a significant setback for the star batter and his supporters ahead of IPL 2026.
