Runners-up in the previous edition, South Africa begin their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign in Ahmedabad on Monday, February 9. The Proteas will face Canada as they look to start their tournament with a win in what promises to be a challenging Group D.
Led by Aiden Markram, South Africa enter the competition with plenty of firepower and strong experience in T20 cricket, especially in Indian conditions. The squad includes several IPL stars and players who have toured India multiple times in recent years. Earlier this season, the Proteas faced reigning world champions India in a five-match T20I series, giving them valuable match practice in similar conditions.
Markram and his side will look to use their powerful batting and disciplined bowling attack against a relatively inexperienced Canadian team. Canada, however, will aim to put up a spirited performance in a rare encounter against a strong ICC full-member nation.
