Mohammad Rizwan was retired out during a Big Bash League (BBL) match, with the decision taken purely for tactical reasons. The Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter had played a long innings, but his strike rate had slowed in the later stages, and the team required quick runs at the death.
The coaching staff decided to send in a fresh batter to accelerate scoring, taking advantage of the BBL rule allowing “retired out” as a strategic option. Rizwan accepted the move professionally and continued to support his team from the dugout.
Tactical retirements like this are becoming increasingly common in franchise T20 leagues, especially in high-pressure situations where a change in momentum can be decisive.
