New Delhi, August 20: The Government of India has reaffirmed its stance on sporting ties with Pakistan, making a clear distinction between bilateral and multilateral engagements. The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs clarified on Thursday that while India will continue to abstain from any bilateral sports exchanges with Pakistan, the national team will participate in multilateral tournaments such as the upcoming Asia Cup.
“India’s approach to sports events involving Pakistan reflects its overall policy in dealing with that country,” the ministry said in its statement.
On bilateral ties, the ministry reiterated: “Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan, nor will Pakistani teams be permitted to play in India.” However, in global or continental events under the aegis of international sporting bodies, India will continue to participate in matches involving Pakistan, guided by international practices and the interests of Indian sportspersons.
The clarification comes amid growing calls for India to boycott Pakistan at the Asia Cup, especially after the BCCI announced the 15-member squad earlier this week. The debate intensified following India Champions’ withdrawal against Pakistan Champions in the Legends tournament in England earlier this summer, and with sponsors like EaseMyTrip pulling support.
By drawing this line, the government has ensured that Indian teams will remain part of ICC and ACC tournaments, even when Pakistan is involved. This also allows Pakistani teams to compete in multilateral events hosted in India.
In a significant step, the ministry also announced easing visa processes for sportspersons, team officials, and representatives of international sporting bodies to strengthen India’s bid as a preferred destination for major global tournaments, including the Olympics. Multi-entry visas of up to five years will now be granted to international sports officials during their tenure.
The policy underscores India’s emergence as a credible host for international sporting events while clearing uncertainty around its participation in the Asia Cup, scheduled from September 9 to 28 in the UAE, where India and Pakistan are expected to face off.
