Cricket has always been a sport of giants — but every now and then, an underdog steps up and rewrites history. These moments remind us why we love the game: it’s never truly predictable. Here are five of the greatest underdog stories in cricket tournaments:

1. India’s 1983 World Cup Win

Before 1983, India had never won a single World Cup match against a Test-playing nation. Few gave them a chance against the mighty West Indies in the final at Lord’s. But Kapil Dev’s team stunned the world by bowling out Clive Lloyd’s men and lifting India’s first-ever World Cup. That win changed Indian cricket forever.

2. Kenya’s Dream Run – 2003 World Cup

Kenya shocked the cricket world by reaching the semi-final of the 2003 World Cup. They beat Sri Lanka in the group stages and went on to qualify for the knockouts, the only non-Test playing nation ever to do so. Their fairy-tale run remains one of the most incredible achievements in World Cup history.

3. Afghanistan’s Rise – 2015 World Cup

From playing in refugee camps to defeating full-member nations, Afghanistan’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Their victory against Scotland in the 2015 World Cup was their first-ever win on the big stage, and since then, they have grown into a force in world cricket.

4. Bangladesh Stuns Pakistan – 1999 World Cup

Bangladesh wasn’t even a Test nation when they shocked Pakistan at the 1999 World Cup. The victory was so significant that it played a major role in Bangladesh being granted Test status a year later. That match in Northampton is still remembered as the day Bangladesh cricket announced itself.

5. Ireland Topples Giants – 2007 & 2011 World Cups

Ireland has built a reputation as giant-killers. In 2007, they knocked Pakistan out of the World Cup with a stunning win on St. Patrick’s Day. Four years later, Kevin O’Brien’s record-breaking century helped them chase down 327 against England in Bangalore — still considered one of the greatest World Cup upsets ever.
