Spain etched their name into football history with a dramatic 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina after extra time in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on Sunday, July 19.

Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute at MetLife Stadium, sealing Spain’s second men’s FIFA World Cup title and their first since the iconic triumph in South Africa in 2010.

Under Luis de la Fuente, La Roja completed a near-flawless campaign in North America. Spain conceded just one goal across eight matches and extended their unbeaten run to 38 international games, setting a new world record in international football.

Spain’s disciplined defence, dominant midfield control, and clinical attacking displays made them the standout team of the tournament. After overcoming France in the semi-finals, they edged Argentina in a tense final through Torres’ extra-time winner.

The victory is historic for another reason: Spain became the first nation ever to hold both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup titles simultaneously. Spain’s women’s national team won the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 in Australia and New Zealand, and the men’s triumph in 2026 completed an unprecedented double.

The achievement underlines the remarkable growth of Spanish football across both the men’s and women’s game, driven by a long-standing emphasis on technical excellence, youth development, and possession-based football.

With this triumph, Spain have firmly established themselves as the dominant force in world football, holding both FIFA World Cup trophies at the same time while extending their record-breaking unbeaten streak to 38 matches.
